The French Politics are a comparative factor for determining the political environment in Europe – a strong and stable country like France is, however, often hit by strikes of its own citizens against political decisions and law proposals. This is what happened almost a week ago and currently France is being shaken by one of the worst petrol crisis it has ever faced.
The main reason for the rebellious French behaviour of the citizens is the proposed legislation that reforms a crucial factor in the French Employment policies. The new initiative by the government is raising the retirement age from 60 to 62 years. It looks as if it is not a matter of significant change but the French are, as usual, strongly opposing any change that breaks down the quite useful for them stereotype. Thousands of workers stopped exercising their duties, including the workers in France’s 12 oil refineries. This caused not only a subsequent lack of fuel in around 1000 gas stations (as well as some of the largest white diesel suppliers) around the country, but also troubled the whole public.
However, the society seems to be understanding on the topic, especially when it is all about the strike. Even students are about to raise their voices and the effect might be quite devastating over the government – France remembers its history when, after a student protest that gained significant social force, the ruling government was forced to resign.
So it is almost impossible to draw a general conclusion about these strikes and outbursts of public dissatisfaction – the French government and ruling political forces are aiming to adjust the country to a more broader employment plan that has been adopted by many EU members already. However, the French people seem to be uncomfortable with changes that interfere with their already established comfort.
